90* 16g housing on big 16g?

That spinning thing that makes all of the cool noises. OE and Aftermarket.

90* 16g housing on big 16g?

Post by Imprezive »

So I've got a dead 90 degree inlet 16g and a new big 16g turbo but it has the straight inlet.

Think I can just swap the compressor housings? I've heard it can be done...

Mitsubishi turbos can be a bit of a pain in the butt as some compressor housings have flat backed wheels / housings & others are not flat backed & are called superbacked.

I believe the Big 16G wheel inducer is bigger than the standard 16G & am not sure if it will fit in the 90* housing.

That said you can get the Big 16G compressor housing & wheel put on your standard 16g.

I'd call gpopshop as they can tell you if it will bolt in directly or if it will require machine work.
They can also balance the assembly once it is put together (I believe they charge $45 + shipping for balancing) & can give you a quote for your particular set-up + they may have suggestions I know they do TD05 18G upgrades & Exhaust wheel clipping.....

well my old 16g is pretty much dead, thrust bearings are TOAST! So thats why I bought this new 16g. There's a turbo rebuilder local to me who said it would work, so I'll double check with him to see if he is sure of himself.

either that or just spend the $25 and get the stupid 90 degree elbow i need...

I thought you were putting the Big 16G wheel on your 16G turbo....

No need to balance anything if the wheel is not coming off, but I still think the big 16G wheel is big enough to cause contact with a stock 90* housing.

The turbo shop by you may be able to machine your 90* housing, but buying a elbow might be cheaper.

To provide closure to this thread:

It wont be a direct swap, it would need to be machined to fit the 90 degree housing w/ a big 16g wheel. The guy i talked to make it sound like there was enough clearance between the wheel and housing. He's kinda weird, so he never words his sentences correctly. haha
