I guess I created quite the poop storm when attempting to compare my USA Legacy Turbo to a new USA WRX. Oh well, here's more personal observation, purely anecdotal, not scientific at all.
My son (Joel, age 30) and I are both leadfoots, but he is generally a somewhat better performance driver than I am. Joel has a 98 Impreza RS with genuine STI springs and struts with 17" wheels, a MInnam stage 2 turbo woith a BIG Garret turbo and a really big top mount intercooler on an internally stock 2.5 DOHC. We both run Dunlop SP 8000 tires, but his are wider and lower than my 205/55/15" set.
We played car tag from Olympia WA (Wild West Rally) to Richland WA (Jet Sprint Boat Races) sideways across the Cascade mountain Range at White Pass (near Mt. Ranier) and across the great Washington desert to Richland (about 250 miles)
In the really twisty mountain passes Joel was able to drive faster more comfortably than was I. He was cruising along driving with one hand, sipping a latte, while I was pushing my car uncomfortably fast and definitely driving my butt off with two hands. When we got out to wide open desert freeway, I was able to comfortably slip it up to cruising at 130mph and drink a latte while driving with one hand, while Joel's car was a bit more twitchy. The weak link in both cars are the brakes. That damn two-stage booster is way too spongy and the rotors warp too easily. Joel just bought and installed $1700 worth of AP brakes and they are awsome!
We both could have gone faster than 130mph, but as men who respect our valiant state troopers, we didn't want to be misperceived as naughty.
My only real point is that the Impreza was a little better in the really twisty stuff and the Legacy was a little better in the cross country stuff.
They are both damn cool cars!
Remember, I have no ego nor will of my own, I am but an instrument of the will of Allah, so if you heard it from me, it's gotta be true!
