am I missing a dowel rod?

Post by jp233 »

OK I had all the EJ22E engine parts/bolts bagged up separate for where they went (flywheel, oil pan, each case side, timing stuff, etc etc).

Now I notice that I have two holes in the cases and no dowels to go with them.

One is right above the rear main seal,

and the other is right at where the piston size info is stamped on the top of the cases at the joint.

I dont remember dowels being there but it's not out of the question that they were lost either by me, or by the machine shop. I didnt think I had dowels sticking out of the cases when I took the blocks to be cleaned and honed, but that was two months ago now. I should've never gotten this deep right before the holidays, i should have waited and done it all quickly.

so am I missing dowels or are those holes not supposed to have them??

Josh, great pics. I have a boatload of the same pics. Was planning on posting up a ton once I'm actually done with this thing. Did that motor go bang, or just come apart for XYZ reason? (it looks like you have a magical purple small-end rod bearing?)

There isn't a dowel rod above the rear main seal... I have the same ones that are in all those pics. There are only two in the case halves, yeah?

I've got a lot more pics of the swap

http://main.experiencetherave.com/subaru/images/ej22t

No it didn't go bang. I bought it and refreshed it. I did not go over it with a fine tooth comb. I hand the cylinder rehoned, put new pistons & rings, and bearings in and called it a day.

As for "purple" looking rod end. I think it's just the picture and caked on oil residue.

For the dowel, yes just what's in the case showing in the picture.
