Not impossible from what I've read, but let's just say that if I were you I'd start looking for a Turbo 5MT car instead of fiddling with a transmission swap, unless you're REALLY attached to the FWD N/A car you've got now. Hell just keep it and have two, it'll probably cost about the same and when you're done you'll have two nice cars instead of one hacked-up example that's still front wheel drive and N/A.

well i was planning on getting a 2000 RS, then a Forester XT, then maybe just go with an STi, but know i have decided to go with the old school and go one more notch from mine the SS. that way i can get comfortable with the AWD and turbo. i test drove an STi a few weeks back and it kind of scared and i didnt even really get to drive it like if it was my car.
but since i have put so mich work into the car i have now the only wrong is that the rear end is alittle smashed in and with all the pieces coming together now that would ruin the whole car. HEY your car drives nice but looks like @#$%. so this is why i have come to this path. i probably wont do it since i have mods i still want, but in case i find a really good deal i cant pass up

in a difficulty of 1-10 i would say it reads about a 6. The hardest part is the wiring, no doubt. Considering mine is a 92, corresponding with the surrealmirage writeup http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/swap/swap.html
i didnt have to cut the wire for the ecu for high idle. The only wire i did cut was the one for the shift selector light on the dash. I found a car at the junkyard and pulled all of its parts to swap onto mine. A cheaper route is to use a 90-94 legacy 5mt and parts. I also cut the receiving connector off of the auto trans and the receiving connector for the manual trans off of the wiring harness on the donor car. I made a jumper harness with the both of them, plugged it in, and it fired up. Mind you, i didnt wire in the clutch safety switch or cruise control as of yet, but i did finish the wiring in about 20 minutes.
What it comes down to is are you mechanically inclined, know about auto mechanics, have the space to work on it, and access to a donor vehicle?

Who's to say it will still be FWD? He could just as easily make it AWD.cartwheels wrote:when you're done you'll have two nice cars instead of one hacked-up example that's still front wheel drive and N/A.
