'94 5mt AWD compatibility question...

My 94 needs a trans sooner or later, front diff makes a ton of noise, but we've already been over that on an earlier post. So after researching I was thinking that I could use just about any trans 92-98 as long at it was a cable clutch. I've read that the primary fitment issue is with the clutch itself and since I have a new-ish exedy clutch in mine, I checked their site to see what other Subarus that clutch fits. That info leads me to believe that I can't use a trans out of a 2.5 L car, only 2.2. Anybody have hard facts on just what my donor options are without having to make any mods? Thanks for helping to clear this up for me...

As long as he makes sure that the final drive ratio of the tranny matches the final drive in his car. There are both 3.9 and 4.11 push style 5spds.

year doesn't matter, and it doesn't have to be a cable trans. As long as you have the clutch fork, you can make it work by swapping forks and moving the pivot ball that the fork rests on. You can also use post 98 (phase 2) transmissions. As matt said, the only thing that really matters is the FD ratio.

I used it when I put a 2001 Subaru Outback transmission in my 95 impreza with a cable clutch.

Good info guys, thanks. Are the phase 2 transmissions better in some way? My engine is stock n/a and it will probably stay that way so I don't need any kind of bad-ass tranny, just something quiet and smooth.

Figured that as a given,but i guess some folks may not think of that until its too late

Also,even if the ratios dont match you can just use the matching rear diff if needed,nothing hard there.

When you say post '98 is phase 2, does that include 98? Got a line on a '98 Outback 5mt (charts says # is TY752V2DCA). Owner doesn't know specific mileage, between 150k and 200k. It's hydaulic clutch. Thoughts?
