RWD back to AWD...

Post by Mattheww044 »

hey guys ive been talking to kenny if any of you know him and im thinking about buying his SS:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=1701753

however, AWD is almost a must for me (fell in love with subies, that includes the AWD :D). he said that all i would need to do is find a turbo leg/ wrx center diff and swap it out and it would be AWD again. Has anyone ever done this? how much do they run and how hard is the swap?

Get that car! I think it was Kelly's old car, if I'm not mistaken.

Putting in the center diff isn't THAT bad, and for the car you'd be getting...totally worth it.

Aaron, you're right that is kelly's old car. I've always loved that car...

You would need to use a center diff out of a phase 2 transmission (1999 and up) since it has a WRX transmission which is phase 2.

A legacy turbo diff would NOT be compatible unless the entire tail shaft was used as well. If you did go that route, and used the entire tail shaft, you need to know what rear diff that car has. Reason being the transfer gears in the WRX are different from all other subarus in order to work with the 3.54 rear diff ratio of that diff.

I've put together a writeup and posted it here:

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=39306

That tells you everything you need to do for center diff work.
