removing sedan spoiler

Post by Bdub »

I was thinking about repainting my spoiler.
I see there are two bolts which hold it down, but are there clips that keep it in place as well?
I haven't tried to take it off, just kind of took a good look at it.

Two bolts on each side, and then each side has a little plastic clip that pops right out. Don't forget to undo the wire harness for the brake light in the spoiler too.

I am going to remove and paint mine also. When looking through the access hole I saw a nut on a stud looking fastener and the plastic plug in, but didn't see another nut. Where is it at?

I've already ordered a spray can of mica black(952) spray paint from www.paintworldinc.com. What material is the spoiler made of? Not that it matters much. The paint sure chips off of it easily. Wind sucks it off maybe. Good luck on your paint job.

n2x2 is exactly right!

The wing is made out of fiberglass.

It's definitely fiberglass. I suggest chipping off the rest of the paint with a piece of plastic (like an old credit or movie rental card). It will come off easier that way then sanding it.

Subaru spoilers and the chrome-painted-black window sills, the paint sucks.

Thanks.

I don't need to remove the paint, the car is doing a good job at shedding it itself.

Mine's in the same boat. Hopefully I'll be buying a gun this summer to clean up my Leggy's paint.

Update.

I painted my spoiler last summer, and it came out pretty good. Could have been better, finish wise, but I prepped the hell out of it.

I gave the car a nice wash by hand today, and I was inspecting all the poor battle wounds that old bitch winter gave to my poor car.
I discovered that the relatively new paint on the spoiler is bubbling up and cracking. I'm not sure what went wrong, but I suppose I'm going to have to lay down a a lot more primer. The paint just doesn't want to stick to that damn thing.

I took mine off the SS and it's won't be going back on. I just need to weld up the holes still. I like the look of wingless with the WRX scoop

What are you going to do with the wing and what color is it? I may be interested in it as mine lost its somewhere in its life and I kinda like the idea of having the stock spoiler.

If you have deep chips in the fiberglass itself, you should try to fill it in with resin or gelcoat. Moisture wicks along the fibers and causes trouble.
