Grinding gears...

Post by cj91legss »

My second and third gear is grinding a bit. second real bad, third not so.... anyways i was going to try putting some new gear oil in... just cant seem to find how much i need.

also any serious recomendations for an additive, like lucas oil or something to help with the grinding?

im almost certain that the synchros are just a little out of wack... just don't want to buy a new transmission.

You'll need to get 4 qt's of gear oil. The trans will only take about 3.4 qts or so. Just keep checking the level to make sure you don't overfill.

Rear diff takes about 0.7 qts, so you'll need another qt for it, since you can't buy 0.7 qts :)

As for the grinding. Some have said the uncle scotty cocktail has worked, as well as other additives. If your transmission/syncros are marginal, you could try the oil/additive and see if helps. Just make sure you understand that the additives aren't always the best for all the other components.
