Ok, I replaced the Coolant Temperature Sensor and got that stuff
worked out, but the quirks remain as related to the possibly bad TPS.
First sympton:
Slight throttle tip makes the engine speed drop when parked while
idling. Engine is close to stopping but not quite.
Second symptrom:
Related to #1. Drop in rpms when accelerating from stop.
Thrid symptom:
"POWER" light comes on occastionally for brief or noticeable periods
of time at random intervals.
Fourth symptom:
Reluctance to go into "POWER" mode and flat spot at full boost around
3K with plenty of throttle.
This part is just a bit over $300 so i'm reluctant to replace it and
not have it cure the ailment. Has anyone else had such a problem?
It doesn't seem unlikely that Subaru used the same TPS in all
Legacies so in theory a TPS from a wrecked 2.2 NA engine should work
correctly. It doesn't measure the airflow or anything else, just the
position of the throttle, so it shouldn't require an advanced part.

Dave, it does sound like it's TPS related, especially since that is
what the TCU depends on to put the tranny into "power" mode, which
you mentioned you were having some problems with as well. I would try
that first if it were me. And being that the TPS was already found in
your trouble codes, I would definitely lean that way.
You are also correct is assuming all TPS's were the same, at least
for all of this style Legacy. There is a place here in PA that is
probably one of the largest Subaru salvage yards in the country. If
you can't find one cheap out there, let me know and I'll see what
they want for one.
It is also possible to adjust the TPS I believe, but I never messed
around with it simply because I never had a need to. Might be worth a
shot since you are probably going to be getting another one anyway.

Since i got my Haynes 90-98 Manual i've learned a lot about this car,
much more than the "cover-all-models-from-85-99" Chilton book.
The TPS is slightly adjustable and i'm going to get a digital
voltmeter and probe it first before replacing it.
Do you have a website or name of that place? I'm sure i can get one
here but it's probably been sitting in a pile of parts inside the car
for 3 years. Utah salvage yards aren't exactly space-age yet, like
some others.

The name is Octagon Spares and it's in Felton, PA. Just give information a
call and give them that info. You'll probably talk to Corey. He's a decent
guy and has been around Subarus for ever. They don't exactly give stuff
away, but just about every Sube dealer in PA get's stuff off them. I know my
old dealer used them quite often, with no problems ever. Give them a try.

Throttle Position Sensor
Anyone know if the throttle position sensor is the same for an
automatic and manual trans? Mine has been acting up even after a
good cleaning, and I have the chance to grab one for a song off of a
parts car that is an automatic, my 2.2 is a manual. Somehow I keep
thinking that I heard/read that they are different, did an archive
search but came up empty handed, thought I could check with you
guys. Any help would be appreciated, john

As far as I know they are the same in all '89-'94 models. The sensor
on my car was donated by a wrecked automatic and works well.

They are the same for autos and manuals. The only difference is that the older ones.....89-93 or 94 in the US have a 4 wire lead, rather then a 3 wire lead. The older style has the throttle stop built into the TPS, rather then another sensor.
When you took it off and such, are you re-adjusting it properly. You want to adjust it with the throttle stop in mind. I don't remember the specifics, but when I get home or time later, I'll post the info for you, if you want.

Thanks for the input guys, good to know that I don't have to fork out all
that cash for a new one. While my car started fine most of the time, on
occasions it would idle rough right after start and sometimes when putting
it into neutral and coasting up to a stop sign, seemed like the motor didn't
want to idle, it accelerated fine though. I also had the TPS code pop up
every now and again. I did all the necessary precautions befor removing the
sensor, while cleaning it (I didn't even remove the cover and used the
proper electrical contact cleaner and canned compressed air to blow it out)
and I know it is installed right so replacement seems like the best cure for
it. Again, thanks guys, john
