1990 Legacy GT EZ30r Project
Heya,
so the story goes my ej20 is in bits and a cheap ez30r comes up done under 20000k or 12000 miles
so im selling the parts and getting my ez30r avcs avls 250hp it comes with a complete loom ecu and everything on the engine apart from throttle body alternator and power steering pump which i plan on using the standard ones i have now
i plan on running the standard ecu
is there anything else i need to do a conversion into my jdm bc5 legacy 2.0l turbo
what throttle body can i use?
and is there any advice
i have all the radiator mounts clutch gearbox sorted

you will need to plan on running standalone or have some heavy machining ready to modify your knuckles because the ecu is canbus which requires a specific single from each wheel to work. And its drive by wire so you need that t/b along with the pedal.
Honestly if you want to take this route and stay stock ecu you might as well buy a whole smashed car, then have a machineshop somehow retrofit the hubs into your knuckles so the ecu will let you rev past 2 grand. I used to work at ECS and we had a guy do this swap, ended up going with a hydra in the end.

I believe it also has an immobilizer. It might need the orginal key, immobilizer module and antenna, ecu and instument cluster.
Standalone is most likely the safest bet, but it sounds like a cool project. I still say go for it.

Any time you're considering an engine swap from a newer generation car it's going to be nearly complete. You'll not be able to use the stock ECU or engine wiring harness for much, and you're also in relatively uncharted territory.
I would think an EG33 from the SVX, with an OBD-I harness and ECU, would be the easiest. Second to that would be an OBD-I JDM Impreza or Legacy.

There's no such thing as an EZ30R. It's called an EZ30D, regardless of hp.

I actually think an EG33 would be as hard, if not harder, than an EZ30 swap. The EZ30 was designed to fit in the same space as an EJ25, but the EG33 had plenty of room in an SVX engine bay. It's essentially an EJ22 with two extra cylinders. I'd imagine some custom framework (or at least a very complicated radiator relocation) would be necessary.
Furthermore, the EG33 has two throttle bodies as well as a variable intake manifold, so you need to work that into your EM setup.
However, if you like oil leaks, get an EZ30. They're TERRIBLE about leaking oil.
You'll have to lose a turbo on the twin-turbo engine if you decide to go that route. Twin-turbos were designed for RHD cars, and the secondary turbo interferes with either the brake MC or the steering column on an LHD car, not sure.

^ I happen to be good friends with someone who can easily do the wiring for an EG33 into any other subie, and I have a welder and am not afraid to use it. So perhaps I am bias thinking that the EG33 is easier to work with, cause I could put one in something for like $1000 probably.

ok i am looking into it so it is probably not possible at all to run the standard ecu i am looking at a link g4 at the moment is that probably the best idea?
how hard would it be to diy wire up that into 2nd gen legacy
also in your opinions would you use the 2006 b spec loom i got with engine or add extra wires to the old loom

Working with the Hydra software last night made me want to punch myself in the face. It is comprehensive in it's functionality, but it is a royal pain to tune it in any other setting than on a dyno.
For instance, you can't stop logging if you have the logging window open. You cannot edit any of the tables with the logging window open. That made it really frustrating.
With the Link, you just need to get used to reading in kPa.

Yeah, I'm really quite impressed with Link's software. it's got its quirks, but seems pretty decent....and yeah that whole reading in kPa thing.
