Overheating problems... blah

Post by Snowolf2 »

After driving for quite a bit my NA 93 leggy starts overheating a bit. The needle never gets to the top, only about 75%/80% there. If I turn the heat on full blast is slowly goes back towards the middle. Usually takes about 5-10min on the freeway before overheating, and hardly ever happens in city driving. Filled the coolant after this started cause it was pretty low, but still the problem persists.

Recently got a new waterpump and belts on the car. I am hoping its not the headgaskets... :?

Did you burp the air out of the rad? With the engine cool, pull the rad cap,and keep squeezing the upper hose with the front end pointed up in order to get as much air out as possible, and top up the system until it is right at the top of the rad cap.

Another option: The NA's have a bleed screw on the radiator (or should). Fill the radiator and fill the engine from the upper hose on the passenger side. When both are full, reattach the upper hose and unscrew the bleed screw just enough so that it can 'breathe'. Start it and let it get up to temp. You'll get steam @ 1st, but when coolant starts to come out the bleed screw...you're burped. After it cools off, top off the radiator and check the overflow tank level.

When it (if) gets low again inspect the radiator endtanks for cracks, I just needed to j/b weld a crack near the top inlet/outlet.

Yeah, make sure you remove that bleed screw to aid in removal of the air.

^+1. Had the same thing happen in a Legacy. When it would start to overheat I'd flush the cooling w/ a 'DIY garden hose connected to a heater hose' kit. The temp would be fine for about 3mo. then it'd start to overheat and I'd flush it again, and on and on...
But it sound like you may be losing coolant somewhere. I'd check that first.

I havn't found any coolant leaks or cracks in the coolant tank. I am hoping this won't be a recurring issue like beatersubie, I'd rather just get a shiny new radiator.
