CV boot rip

Post by furtherrad »

Thanks for the advice on the clips for the brake pads Josh, I think
very possibly, some moron along the way put of calipers for a N/A
Legacy, as the pads are smaller than two different aftermarket
pads.
Now, while under the car, I've found that the driver's side CV
boot has ripped. Is there an immediate need for a fix, or could it
hold off for a while. Thanks for any advice.
Andrew

CV boot rip

Post by Josh Colombo »

well.....unless you know when it ripped....and if it's been less then a
week or so.....you could get it repacked and fixed......usually once
they rip.....you might as well replace the axle.

Mine were ripped....I thought I caught it in time....only made a noise
under hard accel in a turn......they repacked them.....well it still
made the noise under hard accel.....

Probably better just letting them go till they get real bad and put GOOD
reman axles on......just my two cents.

Josh

CV boot rip

Post by Rod »

if the cv boot has ripped you will be losing grease immediately and letting grit in. Test the cv joint by turning full lock and driving in a circle one way, then the other. If the cv joints are ok you will hear nothing. If you hear a clicking or grinding sound the cv needs replacing.
If you find the cv is ok then replace the boot only ASAP. (do the inner and outer whilst the driveshaft is off) This is a much cheaper option than replacing the whole cv joint.
cheers, Rod.... in oz.
