The RS Liberty came std with a IHI RHB52 turbo.
In comparison, it is basically the same as the TD05 on the 1994-96 WRX.
If you want compare these with a roller bearing turbo it has similar characteristics, i.e.. lag/power to a VF23...

VF12 - I thought someone here said recently that's what an Oz RS had.
If not, what do they have?

My 92 has a VF12 on it but I have read an article where a late RS had a VF14. Anyone else checked theirs? It's etched on an ID plate on the comp housing.

Cheers. Al.

Hi Rod,
RHB52 is just a frame size reference and comes in a miriad of trims that make it behave completely differently between one trim to the other. The VF numbers are the trim sizes. The VF14 may compare to the TD05 but my VF12 equipped 92 is much less laggy than my friends 94 Rex with a TD05(about 1000rpm later and neck snapping :) ).

Cheers. Al.

My RS has std, IHI RHB52. This turbo rocks. You will find a lot of WRX owners upgrading to the TDO5 / VF23 for the extra power as the std WRX turbo, ie TD04, runs out of puff real early. The TD04 is good for city driving as it spools earlier and has less lag but for power it's a little small.
To reduce lag and get the most out of the RHB52 / TD05 you definitely need a good FULL 3" TURBO back system, a free air inlet and I also have a chip installed. On the freeway in 5th gear going up a slight incline my car will boost 16psi @ 3000rpm...
cheers, Rod in oz

aussie rs owners/turbo

Post by Rod »

Alan,
I think that is correct.... My turbo has VF12 stamped on it. It feels to me to be a bit smaller than the VF23 and definately smaller than a TD05.... I would say in order of effective sizing:

TD04, VF24/28/29, VF12, VF23, VF30, TD05, VF22

Not 100% sure regarding VF30/TD05....or VF14
cheers, Rod

aussie rs owners/turbo

Post by Rod »

ok, let me understand this.
the exhaust housing is either a 20-R or a 18-R, the 20-R the bigger of the two and on the earlier models ( on mine 1/92) correct? So which is the VF12 and which is the VF14?
cheers, Rod
