Hey guys. I eventually need to pull my turbo and replace a bunch of the lines going to the turbo, and the rear cam support seal, and any other hoses I have access to while I have the turbo out. The main question is, what issues will I encounter? Will ALL the studs break? If they break what do I do? Is there more things that need to be removed other then the turbo and chimney, and a few hoses?
Reason I ask if I should replace the turbo is if the stock ones usually leak oil? I am annoyed with ANY oil smell, and the turbo is wet, but I am thinking it is spraying from something else. What is the best replacement? Looks like td05. At the same time I will probably be putting a intercooler anyway I figure. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Wondering if I should replace turbo

I just pulled my turbo not even 2 weeks ago to replace leaking hoses...
Personaly if you have the money might as well just go through the whole process and upgrade the turbo and such.
I just pulled my turbo to change the oil outlet tube because it was leaking oil and fixed one of the coolant hoses the U shaped one. Both were leaking on the up pipe smoking like no other.
The studs shouldnt break just coat them all in PB blaster (stuff is amazing) The only issue I had was one of the studs came out of the turbo and the nut ended up getting stripped so it wouldnt come off. I just had to replace the stud, the stud was $10 from Subaru.
Id recomend pulling the air box out and whatever else you can move out of the way to make getting to the turbo easier.
Probably end up replacing alot more hoses than you first thought because they are so brital and old. It happened to me.
Ive got alot of the Subaru Genuine part #'s youll prolly need.

That would be really great if you could send me a bunch of part numbers so I can get everything I need. I don't think there is anything wrong with the stock turbo anyway. Mine has no shaft play. I am confused though, when I remove the bolts from the up pipe and down pipe will I be able to flex the pipes away and pull out the turbo, or do I need to take part the exhaust to? Is there actually enough room to get in there and remove all the bolts to begin with from the top?

Well I have a aftermarket Divorced DP and it has that metal piece in the middle to split the wastegate apart (right?) well I had to unbolt the bracket (DP to the trany) and than the next exhaust hanger and slide the DP back and down because theres still 3 studs on the botton of the turbo to DP holding it together. once you do that the turbo should come up. The hard part is getting to the turbo oil outlet hose its a pain. But we just pulled the turbo straight up because the hose was barely on there (crappy hose clamps) and I wasnt worried about the hose because I was going to replace it anyways.
My stock turbo had no shaft play at all plus it only has 131k miles on it
Ive got some pics from doing this and Ill get you all the part #'s I used and how much it cost. (hopefully tomorrow)
Oh I also recomend replacing those crappy stock hose clamps with the ones that screw down. Makes putting the oil outlet tube on a whole lot easier and if you dont have any get some really long needle nose pliers (I bought 2, a straight nosed and than the one where the end is bent to a 90 degree) they helped alot.

If you do go w/a different turbo, remember to expect some re-plumbing of the turbo's inlet/outlet, esp. if you get one w/out the 90 degree inlet, and go w/an intercooler. Plenty of info on here about that.

Heres some part numbers from when I did it:
These 2 are for the turbo to DP and turbo to Up pipe gaskets, just forget which is which
44022AA180 $24.99
44022AA150 $15.81
Turbo exhaust stud : 800910340 $.944
I didnt get the genuine oil outlet hose or the coolant hose. It was cheaper just to get the hose from the auto parts store.
But if you want to get the OEM subaru coolant hose (U shaped one) if you need it the # is: Official part number is 807611202 hose 11.5x18.5 http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=39816
Hopefully those help!
