click click click... but only in drive and reverse ???

click click click... but only in drive and reverse ???

was driving fairly hard sometime last week. shifting manually in my auto. whether this has anything to do with my problem im not sure. anyways, when the car is in drive or reverse with the e brake on, i get this ticking noise. almost like a clock but faster. it's like click click click click.

the car does not make the noise in nuetral or park. the noise is loud enough to hear with the car running standing outside of it.

p.s please dont tell me the tranny is going. it's not a good time.

Could be a sign of a torque converter going out the door. Do a fluid change. Does it slip? I wouldn't worry about it to much.

Does it do it if you rev the engine in park or neutral? I am confused though why are you putting the car in D or R with the e brake on? Do you mean trying to make the car move with the brake on? OR getting out to listen to the sound?

Ok,
if it's something inside the trans the sound should sound sort of muffled compared with something from outside... like loose torque convertor bolts say.

So? Does it sound muffled like it is covered in oil, or inside an aluminium case?

Have you tried using a screwdriver to the ear to try and locate the noise a bit more accuratly than the trans? Like say if you could tell if it was coming from the bell housing, front of the trans or the back of the trans it would be a bit of a guide.

Ok, new thought.... in neutral, with the car stationary, there should be nothing turning inside the trans apart from the input shaft and oil pump. Hmmm...


Oh well, thought it might lead somewhere.

SORRY, E BRAKE WAS JUST TO GET OUT AND LISTEN. sound doesnt seem muffled. i dont have that little rubber cover on the bell housing. it got louder yesterday and then went away. the noise sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine area but i cant stick my head down in by the trans.

im thinking trans because of it only happening in d and r.

the car still pulls very hard with no slip or anything ???

Probably just the torque converter by fluke. I would do a fluid change. How often do you replace your fluid? I am thinking I will do my fluid 1 or 2 times a year.

is the torque converter share fluid with the tranny? or front diff?

i,ve checked the fluids on both just never changed them. the tranny fluid is a bit lighter than it was when i bought the car

ive had the car for 2 years, it has 140,000 km, i bought it with 80,000.

im afraid to touch the tranny fluid because i have heard of too many people having tranny problems after a flush.

From your discription, I'd guess that the torque convertor bolts are coming loose(unlikely given that you have had it for a while and don't mention it having been worked on), or, the flexiplate is in the process of cracking.

Purely guess-work though and hard to verify without pulling the motor or trans. So keep looking. Use a long screwdriver or steel shaft to the ear to try to locate the noise?
