I have been meaning to place a question about speedo readings. I have 205 50
16inch tyres on the car and was wondering what speed people were doing at
3000rpm in 5th gear with standard rims and ratio's.

Hi guys, I am in Brisbane, Aus. My 93 RS had standard final drives
and 5th gear, but mixed box ratios from other models and WRX to
change performance in gears a little, and make getting away a little
easier, anyhow I have 225.50.16 Dunlop FM901's, and have often
wondered why all the cops coning in the other direction wave at me on
the highway at 100kph indicated at 3000 rpm!!!!!!

allan nicol.

ps be interested in meeting other RS owners in Bris to chew the fat.

aussie rs speedo accuracy

Post by Rod »

....actually, the speedo should read 120km'h at 3000rpm no matter what size your tyre/wheel combo is. The relation between engine revs/ gearbox revolutions/ speedo indication doesn't change. The speedo receives its signal from gearbox revolutions, not tyre/wheel revolutions. If the overall tyre size is larger than std, you will still show 120km/h @ 3000rpm but the car in fact will be traveling faster, every tyre rotation taking the vehicle further. The opposite is true with smaller dia tyres/wheels than std.... indicating 120km/h @ 3000rpm but the vehicle will actually being going slower than indicated.
Proved this when my friend and I were traveling along the freeway, both cruise control set at 110km'h but he kept pulling away..... he had larger tyre/wheel comb and had increased his overall dia. The dealer had fitted too bigger tyres to the rim .
cheers, Rod

Yep 125 @ 3000 rpm. Checked it this morning on my way to work. Im guessing that the speedo is electronic (hence the lettering there). No cable hey. Would’nt that f#@kya.

....actually, the speedo should read 120km'h at 3000rpm no matter what size your tyre/wheel combo is.
The dealer had fitted too bigger tyres to the rim .
cheers, Rod

aussie rs speedo accuracy

Post by Doug Hancock »

It does say it on the speedo. But what type and part is electronic I don't
know. I have to do the clutch in the next month. I plan to pull the engine
out so I can do the plugs and check gaskets etc.

aussie rs speedo accuracy

Post by Rod »

on my previous N/A Liberty i had to change the cable for the speedo... definitely cable.
On my RS Liberty there is no cable, there is just a wire connection where the speedo cable would enter the box..... this is actualy a speed sensor .... confirmed in the workshop manaul..
cheers, Rod

aussie rs speedo accuracy

Post by alan butler »

Hi all,
The cable and the sensor fit into the same hole in the box, the sensor has a gear on the end of it and is driven the same way. The reason for this in AUS RS's is probably to do with the 260kmh speedo that was specifically made for our market compared to all Jap spec cars which have 180 limiters and therefore 180- 200kmh speedos.
Hey George, how much did you pay for the box, I need one for a mates WRX.

Cheers. Al.

aussie rs speedo accuracy

You could say i got mates rates :D

They didn't know that the box was special and why the ratio's were a
4:44 in a manual. They said because it's not an Australian spec ratio
i could have it for $500. Little did they know how good it is :D So
it was $500 but normally i can get the regular WRX/RS ratio boxes for
around $600ish
George.
