Fog Lights

Post by verdesub »

I have fog ligths installed directly to the battery. I keep leaving them on, thus draining my battery constanly. Could anyone help me figure out how to connect them so that I can turn them on with my parking lights or headlights? Would I disconect the 12v cable off the battery and connect to a wire of the parking lights if so does anyone know which wire it is? Thanks in advance!

Yes that is exactly what you would do. I think the parking lights only have two or three wires going to them, the red wire would be the one you want.

You dont really want to be putting other lights onto existing circuits,as you are adding load to that circuit, yeah you can up the fuse and other such things but not best. You want to take the wire for the parking light and connect it to a relay which takes power from the battery, this way they come on with your parking lights but dont draw from them.

Use a relay as gijonas mentioned.

Using the diagram on my site:

http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/tip.html#relay

Tap into a +12v accessory switched source, like the lead going to the stereo. Run that pin 85. Run a wire from pin 86 to ground. Cut the wire supplying 12v to your fog lights, run one end into pin 30 and the other one to pin 87.

Or you could connect the ground wire from the relay to the switched ground wire for the lights. Then switch the relay with a fused 12v through a switch on the dash. That would allow the relay to work only with the head/parking lights on.

You can simplify the run a little bit by tapping into a fuse in the engine compartment junction box... no need to go all the way into the cabin.

Check at your local auto parts store, they should have little brass tabs, one end goes around one leg of the fuse and snaps back into the holder, the other has a standard male spade terminal you attach your power wire to.
