TC Lock up?

Ok. I have had "Problems" with my lockup TC on my 1993 legacy AT. I want to know some common info here about:

Lock up when should it happen?
Is there some sort of temp when i get it?
Should it happen over a given speed?
Am i just a failure!

Anyways. Aswell if i have been driving for some time and im sitting at a light, so not moving. The car vibrates and sounds kinda odd klunk klunk like? Not very loud tho but you can here it. Aswell when she is making odd sounds the tach is vibrating up and down rather fast. Kinda like a shaking motion.

Any thoughts would be great.

Mine usually locks up over 50mph at light throttle when I've been driving a little bit. It has to warm up, but it shouldn't take too long.

Lockup will vary. It depends on transmission fluid temperature, throttle input, speed, etc.

You can have lockup as low as 25-30 mph if your throttle input is low enough. At these speeds people typically mistake the torque converter unlocking as the transmission downshifting.

What are your symptoms besides the clunking noise.

Symptoms: does not shift into lock up mode at all for the 1st 20-30 mins. Does not matter about speed there. I have pushed the car to around 160kms in 4th and it still would not shift into final lock up...


The car still has good power thats for sure! Considering i work at the local subi dealer and i have driven every subaru but the Justy and the old school 80's ones. The car may have much less top end i say because it dont hit lock. I usually hit 85-95 kms an hour on the highways up in canada. Cuz the limit is 100kms. I never go that fast because the car doesnt shift to lock up....

Im thinking now that my torque converter itself is damaged. Like some of the vains are frigged. Or the temp sensors in the tranny are messed up. Even then i have zero TCU codes i have checked that. One thing that i have NOT tired tho is trying very very light throttle. Ill try that, If that doesnt work ill make video of a short 5-10min drive. It should happen within that time.

Could be a bad TPS or improperly adjusted TPS. Have you tried replacing your transmission fluid?

If you work at a subaru dealership, have them hook up the select monitor and watch the lockup duty solenoid to see what it's doing, as well as other sensors, ATF temp, etc.

Legacy 777. Select monitor is a KICK BUT idea! That totally slipped my mind!
