turbo guide/ FAQ?

Post by kbeefy »

I thought I'd found a basic description in the past of different turbos that would or could be made to fit the first gen Legacies, but I'm not finding anything now. Is the a guide or 'compilation' somewhere I'm missing? Have a 92 SS fwiw.

most people here are running a td04 turbo from the wrx's 02-07
you could go bigger than that. What are you looking for in power wise, spool time? 16g is another, any turbo that doesn't have a 90 inlet tube you'll have to make, most early jdm turbo's have the 90 inlet. search around you should be able to find some thing usefull

Really anything is possible. The fitment is the same for our cars as it is for any other Subaru. So you could bolt up a turbo from a WRX (TD04) or an STI (VF34/VF39) but there are a number of other things you would need to change to make it work. You could even go with a rotated turbo, or a custom turbo kit like that HKS disco potato kit which I want so badly.

To get you started here is the turbo list from Nasioc:

There's no reason that this stuff can't apply to our cars.

I'm personally running JDM '89 Legacy EJ20G DOHC heads with a Kinetic Motorsports EVOIII TD05H-16G turbo. Snagged an '07 WRX TMIC and ebay silicone inlet boot, with a turbo XS bov flange and atmospheric BOV. The intake manifold is a twin-turbo EJ20H unit which is both JDM and RHD. Slodrive has the same one and he has a nice write-up on how to make all of that stuff work. It's basically all bolt ons and all the plumbing is taken care of. It's very easy.

The most difficult part is of course going to be tuning. Not only is it a pain in the ass to mess with wiring, but it's expensive. You could of course get one of the chips that everyone is talking about in the electronics forum but that limits you to certain mods.
I went with Deautschwerks 565cc WRX injectors and got the Carl Davey adapters to make them plug in. For tuning I got a Innovate LC1 and Greddy E-Manage Ultimate, the latter of which I haven't purchased yet.

Thanks for the tips and guides guys.

From the reading and info I've sorted through in the past couple days I'm thinking about a TD04 and 440cc injectors, and maybe a Revtronics stage II chip. I'm not going for all out drag racing, this car is my daily driver that does double duty with some possible rallyX/AutoX and Ice racing. I gather the ej22t has some flow issues and a TD05 looses a bit of bottom end. I'd like to keep this one fairly reliable, but add some fun.

For tuning all I have so far is a LC-1, looking for some gauges. At this point I don't want to go very extreme so I'm hoping a plug-in chip will get me close.

I'll chek out those links.
