Bad shaking and rubbing noise from front end

Post by subiejunkie86 »

Hey guys, sorry to post another thread but my problems seem to be a little different from the rest of the torque bind problems. Anyways, i have a 97 LGT 4eat. A few months ago I swapped the wheels from my 97 to my 93 ss 5mt. Before doing this I had a CV going out on the 97. Long story short. Fixed the cv axle and all of a sudden i was getting a very loud rubbing noise from what seemed like the tires. No visible signs of rubbing though. Also the whole front end shakes and vibrates. The difference is that it does it going in a straight line, not just in turning. Low speeds and high speeds cause the vibration and rubbing noise. I've researched and havent been able to find the exact same problem. Any advice would be beneficial. By the way shaking is really bad. Feels like whole front end is going to fall apart.

Did this start happening right after you changed the CV axle? A bad axle can shake like mad.

I parked it for a little while cause i knew the axle was getting bad. Started just shortly before fixing. After the vibration started i had it fixed immediately. Fixing the cv axle did not fix the rubbing or vibration.

Seems to fit the torque bind problem. other than its much worse. Shakes while driving straight. WOT doesnt help nor does light acceleration. Again i fixed the cv axle and that didnt fix my problem. Could it have something to do with the fact that i swapped the wheels? I swapped them back but problem didnt disappear. I am so totally sick of messin with this car. My 93 is a champ but always seem to have problems with the 97. Plus vibration doesnt get worse or better during turns.

Did you leave the big ass nut that holds the shaft on loose? I experienced serious knocking and shaking when I had a cone washer wear out after a cv replacement job. Its not like a rear hub on a drum where you leave it a little loose. you have to tighten the hell out of it but before you do check the washer!

Dont know. I had midas do the repair on the cv. I'll have to check it out. But at the same time it started doing this before and after the repair. But a good possibility considering i kinda live in a redneck town were everyone drives a big ass truck and knows nothing about subies.

I was editing my post when you replied, check the last part about checking the washer before just tightening the nut.

Sorry for the stupid question, but where exactly is this cone washer located at. Most of my mechanical ability is in the engine department. Havent worked with suspension a whole lot. so i may have more redundant questions.

There is a cotter pin on the nut, a nut, a flat washer, and then a cone washer (they call it a center piece) and thats all. Chilton's says it should be torqued to 108Ft lbs.

Cool. I'll have to check it out tomorrow. wont be able to get to it today. I'll keep it updated. Hopefully not my transmission and it is the washer or nut. Thanks

Mike,

What are you calling the cone washer? The cv axle only has the nut at the end....unless I'm totally confused at what you're talking about...
