quick question for a bud-run a 91 2.2 on 96 2.5 ecu/wiring?

Post by biggreen96 »

Has anybody ever run a 2.2 from a first gen legacy in a 2nd gen? I want to help him out with this but can't afford to have his car in my garage for very long.

We would have a complete donor 91 wagon to move parts from, but I don't have time to do an entire harness swap. Can the 91 ecu be plugged into the 96 wiring? any help is great, even just a link to another thread is cool.

The 91 ECU cannot be plugged right into the 96 wiring.

You can't just swap the engine right over. You could get it to run with the 96 ECU but may have some troubles. Off the top of my head, you may have problems with the injectors being wrong and/or the IAC valve being wrong (possibly depending on whether the 91 is a manual or an automatic). I believe the 96 ECU will also be unhappy about the lack of an EGR system.

If you have access to parts from other models you could probably mix-and-match things to make it work though.

What's wrong with the EJ25? If you had to you might be able to swap just the EJ22 block over or something.

Blown head gasket on the 96's 2.5 - and we don't have very good access to other models. We just have the 2 complete cars, the 91 and 96. Both autos.

Is plopping the 2.2 in under the 2.5 intake manifold an idea? Seems like I have heard of people doing stuff like this... that it runs, but sub-optimally from the missing .3 liters of displacement.

What if we found an obd2 2.2 ecu?

I don't believe that DOHC EJ25 intake manifold will fit the EJ22 heads.

If you can find an OBD-II EJ22 ECU from a model that doesn't have EGR (if such a beast exists), and fuel rails from a 92-94 Legacy, then you could probably make that work with the 96 MAF sensor and injectors.

This is off topic but wouldn't replacing the headgasket be easier than, if it can work, to swap heads and motor?

I don't think he's considering swapping the heads separately from the motor. I'd argue that it can be easier, in some cases, to swap an entire engine than to replace head gaskets.

Ahh, ok. I need to stop reading for tonight. Everything is starting to run in to each other and turn into lines. Figured that was why he was asking if the wiring would just plug into each other. Being an OBD II ecu, Couldn't Biggreen96 splice or swap the wires to the correct terminals for the sensors and run a reflash to the ECU to make the 2.2 work? I was trying to read up on openecu.org but the words begin to turn into lines again.... sorry :(

hehe well my buddy realizes now that it's going to be much easier and quicker to just redo the head gaskets on the 2.5. Which is sort of meh, since I sort of wanted to swap in the 2.2 and use the 2.5 for my rally project.

Thanks for the replies Vikash. I will be putting a 2.5 in my 92 turbo chassis regardless this summer. But time wont be an issue and I can spend how ever long figuring out the wiring etc etc.
