Plz Help ID EJ20DOHC

Post by wtdash »

Looking @ this engine from CL.

The owner doesn't know year or KMs, only was told the compression was 155-165 in all 4 cyl. Engine's been sitting in his garage for 3 years (sandrail project).

The turbo may be a TD05?

Thanks

2 things lead me to believe it's a EJ20G (from Wikipedia):
-Coil on plug
-Divorced idle air control valve

And the 90-degree inlet means it's from the EJ22T time frame?

Which means it may also be a closed-deck? One clue to a closed-deck is provided by Matt M. and Phyrra:
PhyrraM wrote:From what I understand, look for a casting pattern of small squares in the bellhousing. Also 3 or 4 cast lines on the starter bulge.

But I can't see inside the bellhousing due to the flywheel. :(

It looks like the compressor inlet elbow is bolted on. I believe that was only done on IHI turbos, so I'd say chances are that's a VF10.

I'd put money on it, that's it's an EJ20G. Well, at least that it has EJ20G heads on it.

The EJ20G had the 90* turbo inlet, whereas the 20K, 20H, etc had the turbo inlet routed under the manifold.

How much is he asking? I would NEVER just stick that in and hope it runs. I would tear it down 100%, rebuild it and THEN start it up....

He was asking $500 for 2 engines- this EJ20 and an EJ25 w/a spun rod bearing....I'm only interested in the EJ20. Waiting for a $$ back on just the EJ20.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

Those valve covers are definitely EJ20G. Other parts match too.

Bolt on turbo inlet and twin bolt coils make this an early EJ20G out of a BC/BF Legacy.

Flywheel means a manual transmission, which most likely had one of the larger turbos, such as the VF8.

If considering a motor such as this, remember that the "hard" half of the swap is the vacuum, PCV, idle air, etc. tubes and pipes. Unless your willing to fabricate all that stuff yourself, that is.
