All my paint fell off the alluminum after a year. I neglected to use an etching primer like I should have.

I used an etching primer and still had the same problem. Same brand paint, too. Intake manifold seems better, but I haven't installed it yet. I wonder if aluminum absorbs oil to some extent and after 15 years or so, requires soaking in degreaser for an extended period first. I know the paint is good as I've seen it on other things, so it must be something I did wrong.

Some aluminum alloys can definitely absorb oil. I know I have some aluminum cookware that is now yellow because of oil laden with turmeric. Out of curiosity I took a Dremel to it and found I had to grind a fair bit of material away before it was aluminum-colored again.
