5 Speed Legacy gearbox from 1990

Post by Legacy-90RS »

Hello Subaru friends :-)

I have a question if anybody known if there is a difference between a 5MT from a Legacy 1990, and 5MT from 1991? Ive heard that Subaru made upgrades in 1991 5MT gearbox...is that true? :?

The second question is. I have a idea to upgrade my 1990 5MT gearbox with a PPG gearkit for the WRX Impreza, and have found a suitable kit with straightcut gears at 1:st and 2:nd.....and i am trying to found out if it could fit my older 1990 gearbox.

If anyone knows please tell me :-)

Best Regards

I don't believe there was any difference between a 1990 and 1991 gearbox. All 1990-1991 FWD 5MT gearboxes are the same, and all 1990-1991 AWD 5MT gearboxes are the same.

I don't know the answer to your second question.

You need a WRX case if you want the PPG WRX gears.

Phil explained all this a while back. IIRC, you can get a dog engagement set for the older case, to the tune over $5k.

If it's really $5000 for the kit, you should probably consider swapping the entire transmission rather than rebuilding it.

Yeah, I'd get an STi 6-speed conversion instead. It would probably stronger than whatever gear set you decide to get, too.

Not really

The PPG dog gears are far stronger than the STi 6 speed...

And the 5 speed gear ratios are much nicer in my opinion
