Ignition Coil Windings.

Post by scuzzy »

FYI, another thing I learned in my endeavors with my rally car. (new Link G4 Storm ECU in, btw)

Anyway, I sourced a second ignitor and was going to use a spare coil to do direct ignition (rotational idle, antilag, that goodness); however, each POST on the coil is attached to it's own winding; even though the posts share a primary, they are on their own secondary (I think that's the right order)

so when you trigger one side (one pair of posts) both posts get their own separate energy from their own windings - so you can't just drive one side of the coilpack, for example, and seal off the other two to achieve direct spark with two coils and two ignitors (like I was hoping to do).

Well you CAN, you just get a massive (and loud, and dangerous) spark through the insulator on the post that grounds out on the other set of posts.

Hope this helps others not waste the same time I did :)

Yeah, I ran into a wall with the wasted spark setup. I think it is because the coils don't get enough dwell time. Anyways, I had to change plugs every 3k otherwise I'd start to get misfires. That was at a .028 gap too.

Well this is just strictly a rally car, it probably won't see a thousand miles a year since I'm towing it on a trailer.

I'm trying to figure out what sort of coils I need to purchase; I've got two ignitors and don't mind using those all day long since I can get them for a few bucks at any parts yard off a dead subaru.

Just need to figure out what coils to buy and where I can get them from, working with the stock plug wires is also a big plus. any ideas?
