Spring Rates??

Post by Slow Hatch »

Looking at some GroundControl coilovers and debating on what spring rates to go with. On my turbo civic I ran 500lb fronts/600lbs rears. I don't mind a stiff ride, but whats a good setup for trackdays etc.

Umm 5 and 600 on a civic? why not just weld the control arms solid to the body ?

Lol, you'd be surprised. Lots of civic track cars run higher than that. 600lbs is about the limit stock Koni Yellows can handle before you need to re valve them.

check out the suspension sticky, there's a bit of info on there for spring rates.

i run an sti front spring at around 230 and wrx rears around 130. the car does handle very well with this set up, but it is a daily driver.

i can hit a bump on a hard corner without wheel hop.

for track i think this car would handle nicely with around a 350 spring rate front and back. bt it may not be so nice on the street.

please remember that wheel rate should be how you compare different cars, not spring rates. spring rates should be multiplied by the motion ratio to get the wheel rate. on mcstruts like ours, we have about a .95 motion ratio(said the whiteline tech) while most hondas with their double wishbones have about a .6 motion ratio. that means that a 500lb/in spring rate is only good for a 300lb/in wheel rate on the civic.

depends on the tire. With street tires, 450 ish lb-in front and back works pretty well with big swaybars. An R-comp requires more spring.

So the coilovers I'm now looking at offer a 10k front and 8k rear(558lb front/447lb rear) Would this be a good setup, along with a bigger than stock rear bar?? I want to go ahead and get something with enough rate for the track, and possibly R comp later down the road.

yeah that will be okay. You might also want to try switching the front and rear springs, but that's more helpful with high power awd cars that you can get rotated and then just hammer on it.

Couldn't a bigger rear sway effectively do the same thing??
