Post by mmmkyle »

i have A 93 SS with a 06 wrx tmic with the stock vf11 and wanted to know if its worth doing the td04 swap to it?

would i have to get other parts so that it would run ok i dont want to do it if my car is going to run like crap..

and if the td04 is a better swap then the td05 idk i just want some advice so that my car doesnt blow up if i do it..

any advice would be really appreciated thanks....

td05 will run nice.

run a search on the two subjects and read the how to's.

lots of feedback in there.

it's true that you can find a general consensus on this subject through searching

my quick 'take' on it would be:

yeah, you can swap a TD04 in without adding any support mods (since you already have intercooler) and be fine

but you needn't bother since the gains would be marginal at best

TD05 is worth the effort most likely, but is generally supported by some or all of this: a walbro fuel pump, slightly bigger injectors, fuel cut defender to allow higher boost levels, a chip/engine management system to adjust ratios and timing, wideband oxygen sensor

I'm not quite ready to support a TD05 or VF39 or what have you. I ended up putting in the TD04 merely to make the '06 top mount fit more easily... if you already have the intercooler on, then save up to put in a turbo bigger than the TD04

i've got the td-04 in with intercooler and exhaust and 480cc injectors and the revtronix chip (see my signature).
in "power" mode i hit slightly above 17psi and lets just say its a hell of alot quicker than when i ran the vf11 at 12 psi. gives a very nice kick in the back. the td-04 has noticeably better top end than a vf11.

power wise its around wrx range but theres more torque than a wrx has so that helps the extra weight get up to speed quicker.

that being said i'm sure i'll upgrade to a td-05 or equivalent with a piggyback when i have more money. but this was the cheapest way to get reliable fun out of my car. and it is very fun.

btw the td-04 ran me 70$ whereas the cheapest td-05 i had found at that time was around 300$ i think. so more than 3 times the price.

I have two Legacy's that I swapped TD04's on. Well worth the upgrade. The TD04 will make much more boost up top, the vf11 just falls flat. And surprisingly, the td04 barely has any more lag than a vf11.

Never been a real big fan of the ihi series turbos used on Subaru's... I have owned several different models and they just don't seem to perform that impressively (flow vs. lag, wastegate issues etc.) The TD04 is still a tiny turbo, but a nice upgrade over the vf11.
