exhaust leak under load?

Post by suba »

After putting on a new muffler I've noticed some new noises that were covered up by the rattly muffler before. When the engine is under load it sounds like I have a tiny exhaust leak (the kind at the flange on the manifold, you know, that tic sorta popping sound). I crawled under the car and felt around the manifold but didn't notice anything. Also at idle it doesn't make a peep, just under load, louder with higher load. Anyone experience this before?

Probably exhaust shields rattling.

I thought so too, but I did a thorough check, everything is tight and no leaks anywhere along the exhaust that I can find.

If you run your hands by the joints, can you feel any exhaust coming out?

Check on first startup in the morning. You may be able to see some water vapor coming out.

Other thing to try is have a friend rev the engine while you check things out.

I had a weird whistle which I thought was a vacuum leak. Turned out to be a hole in the muffler some where, which wasn't apparently obvious.

one way to check would be to perform a seafoam test and have assistant look for leaks :)

I did seafoam it, but found no traces of smoke anywhere, though I did only check at idle
