and just to specify, gijonas isn't saying 'yes yes yes' in a dismissive way, he is saying YES to all your questions. I think.

The block is strong. very.

The upgrades are economical if you desire.

It's worth it.

Stock, the motor feels quite restricted. But a coffee cup and some 3" exhaust changes everything.

yes an actual cup that is for coffee.

though I don't have one, it is a valid course of action.

and wrx takeoff turbos and top mounts are just gettin less and less expensive.

there is a chip now so you don't HAVE to spend money/time on tuning if you don't want to

based on what you have said you should DEFINATELY make the trade. I am assuming the gearbox is manual, or if not that you truly want an auto.

I wouldn't say it's that cut and dry. It depends on how nice the legacy is and how nice the forester is. That and other things like mechanical conditions and miles on each and stuff like that.

I know my car is mechanically sound but has 192k on it. And this other car has got 175k on it. From the pics and from his word it should be a solid car. I am a mechanic so if it needs work I am up to it. Just not familiar with the older subarus. I am a subaru tech now. So I know the new stuff that comes into the dealership. Thanks again

When I first discovered LegacyCentral, I had a '93 Legacy NA. It had really good offline torque--it would put you back into your seat. That Legacy could EASILY beat any stock Subaru with a 2.5L engine. I'm not absolutely 100% sure but I think a lot of it had to do with the OBDII emissions on the second generation Legacies reducing the power/torque delivery considerably.

Anyway, I had asked for opinions on this Board and the members that responded encouraged me to get a Legacy with the turbo engine. I was still hesitant but when a '93 ss showed up for sale locally, I went to test drive it. Within a couple of blocks driving it, I had this grin on my face that I couldn't get rid of. I don't at all regret buying that ss. The ss didn't have the same offline torque but it was easy to feel the increased power in all other driving conditions as compared to the NA.

I think you'll feel similarly. While in stock form the ss may not have gobs and gobs of power, there definitely is an improvement in power over any stock 2.2 and 2.5 engine. If there's anything wrong with it mechanically or electrically, I'm sure you have the skills to remedy/improve it. And, selective mods will unleash a lot of "hidden" power.

So, my vote is, Yes, go for it!!!

Oh, and welcome to Legacy Central!!! :D

Wow! Don't wait! Be sure you get it!

With all the work that was done on that ss, there's no IC on it? Also, you might want to ask if the front brakes are stock or if by chance wrx brakes were installed (which would be an inexpensive but good upgrade).

After you get it, keep us posted on the upgrades you do to it! :D
