Wierd noise coming from tranny/diff....

Hey guys Ive got Kelly's old legacy, its got a WRX 5speed tranny, but I was told something happened with the center diff, so the PO cut the axels and welded the center diff. It just started doing this but when getting on the throttle (at all, not just WOT), it makes a wierd like metal-to-metal sound almost like grinding or chirping. Its pretty loud and very annoying Ive been trying to drive it as little as possible til i can get it figured out. I checked the tranny fluid and it seems to be where it needs to be. I was just curious what I should be looking for when I get it in the air tomorrow. I would imagine its something to do with the tranny since the center diff is no longer being used. I really hope the tranny isn't toast. Anyways thanks guys!

did you check the head light fluid? Heard subies make weird noise when the head light fluid is low or maybe the muffler bearing?
