Dash lights and side lights not working

This one is stumping me. Dash panel lighting (illumination), tail and the little headlamps don't work from the stalk control but tail and sidelamps work using the "position" switch. Checked and verified all fuses and relays to be OK. Currently dismantling the combination switch (stalk controls) to check. Anyone had this prob before?

You might want to check your illumination relay, right next the blinker
relay, behind the radio are on the passenger side, if you take your glove box
out, you can see it very easily.

I've checked the illumination relay but it's not where you say it is though (uk car). On mine it's on the starboard side under the dash on the wing side above the inside fusebox. I'll check to see if there are more relays where you say in the morning. I've also pulled the end of the stalk off(!!) - the plastic bit that turns the light switch. Lights were not working before I broke this this evening. Anyone know if I've broken it permanently or can I just stick it back on??
