Interior Door Locks & Levers

I have a '90 LS with power locks. I recently purchased it and the
drivers side back door wouldn't open but I'm going to try to slim jim
that later. The two passenger side doors just started this weird
thing. When using the drivers power lock the other doors locks open
all the way for a moment and then retract part way in. When you open
either door using the inside handle the lock locks itself as you pull
the handle thus re-locking the door half open....a pain. So I tell
my passengers to hold the lock open while pulling the handle to get
out. Any one see this before? I assume there is something going on
with the mechanical linkage.

Also, the drivers door will open when the lock is set. Pull the
handle and the lock opens enough to allow the door to open. Some
late seventies Fords did this as a feature but I don't think the
Legacy is supposed to do this.

I notice similar things with mine, same year and model. When I unlock the
doors from outside, I have to make sure that I turn the key the full turn, or
else the passenger side lock only half way opens and wont lock properly until
I lock and unlock from the outside again. Also the thing with pulling the
handle while the door is locked mine does that too but only from the
driverside door.

The way the power locks should work is that you should be able to press the drivers power lock button and it should open the rest of the doors.

What is happening in your case is this. There is a small plastic clip that holds the spring for the handle. Over time this clip breaks and the spring then rests against the back of the lock button. As you pull the handle, it puts more tension on the spring and will lock the lock button.

What you can do to fix it is use some tie wire or some sort of metal bailing wire or something. bend it so it goes in the back of the lock, fish the spring then bend the metal wire back against the backing of the door lock mechanism. I did this a few years ago on my 90 legacy, on both the drivers and passenger side.

Honestly......a paper clip will work just fine......just use the bigger ones....more metal....bend it to shape and cut with wire cutters.
