Auto Transmission

Wondering, does anyone know if/how the auto gearbox "knows" when to change
up through the gears, and can this be tweaked?
I find that my transmission will not rev past say 4000 rpm before it
changes up. This is under moderate-to-heavy throttle.
Have tried progressively more throttle as revs increase but no difference.
If I floor it it will obviously change down even if it means nearly hitting
the redline.
Could a reset of the ECU "unlearn" this?

On this topic, Josh how did your transmission work go?

cheers

Tranny work went ok, put in the shift kit. The shift between 1st & 2nd
is better. There's still some lag between 2nd & 3rd some times and 3rd
to 4th. The bands are just wearing.....not uncommon with as many miles
as I have.....but they are better shifting then before. Trans internals
seem good.....so Erich the guy who rebuilt it said, it'd prob last
another 100,000.......not sure if I'll have it in the car that
long.....but we'll see

On a sorta note to what you mentioned. My tranny started acting weird
in colorado.....it didn't want to downshift properly from 4th to
3rd......it lags....thinks.....disengages the locking torque
converter....sits there for a sec...then finally downshifts......it
feels like an eternity. It's still doing it.

Someone mentioned altitude could have had something to do with it. Also
someone mentioned that the TCU can not be reset by battery method, it
has to be reset with the select monitor. I'm not sure if this is truth
or not. But I may break down and spend the $75 for one hour labor or
what not for a tech at the dealer to clear the ECU and TCU.

Something like this may help shifting issues you are describing.....not
sure....but worth a shot.

There's an easy answer. Convert to manual :) :) :) Then you can
start to have some fun :) :)

I'm not positive, but I think it is how fast the accelerator is
depressed that gets it to upshift. That is how it seems to work when
I need it to upshift.

From what I understand the transmission has two
"modes" the power mode for shifts at higher rpms and
the normal or economical mode for shifts at lower rpms
to promote good gas mileage. I don't think you can
change the shift points.

The only thing you can really do is mess with the TPS......the TPS controls when it downshifts and all that fun stuff. You can tweak it slightly, so it's still in spec, but may give you slightly higher gear changes. Only main issue is with the older TPS's they have a built in throttle stop switch. So the TPS needs to be adjusted so that is in the right specs.

Check this info out on the TPS from the FSM's

The second page has the most pertinant info in the bottom right hand corner.

I think you've nailed it there Andrew. unfortunately My tranny likes
staying in economy mode. It will go into power mode with some right footed
persuasion tho...
thanks to all for comments/suggestions
