Well,
I've concluded that my turbo on my, '91 U.S. spec without
intercooler, has developed a leak. I'm trying to remove the shield
above the turbo to access it. What the question is (1) should I try
to fix the leak? The turbo has, or at least the car has, 180K
miles. (2) I was wanting to put on a turbo and intercooler from
the '90's WRX, but don't think I've got that much money right now.
(3)Should I try to get the turbo rebuilt, or swap it for another?
All ideas are much appreciated! I'm out of Colorado.

Turbocharger leak from an oil pipe
If it's just a leak from one of the oil pipes(in or out) the pipeing
should be replaceable. Unless there is an internal leak, or you've
been running the turbo with the knowladge of the leak and think
you've burned out the bearings you should be able to keep the turbo..
if you don't want it i'll take it if it's just an oil leak from one
of the pipes.
I have a smaller turbo off of my 89 RX and i've had that thing appart
in all it's peices. yours is just a little bigger.. if it;s just a
pipe leak.. replace the pipe.. problem solved.
Rebuilding your turbo will be expensive.. but will give your turbo a
new life, better spool...

I'm not sure what you consider expensive to rebuild a turbo but I
paid $344.84 for a rebuild at Turbonetics in california. It was
about $106 in parts and the rest was in labor. I asked about
upgrades and they said it was possible but of course it would add a
bit more to the cost.
here's the info:
Turbonetics
5400 Atlantis Ct.
Moorpark, CA 93021

i called a few other places too. I have the list on my website.
http://lexinator.com/cars/legacy and go down to the turbo rebuild
section. i was looking primarily in california. there may be some
closer to you in colorado.
http://www.ihi-turbo.com/ is the website i used to find companies
that were certified to rebuild our turbos.
