Go to your dealer. They can get a rebuilt technically new tranny from Japan. Why pay for a rebuild?! OR you can buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself. There are some manuals that explain how to do it. Best thing to do is find a good auto tranny shop locally, get the parts and get them to rebuild your tranny.

tranny mainshaft$$$

The parts that are bad are the reverse gear and the mainshaft, together costing $900 according to Aamco does that sound right?

MT or AT?

If it's an MT and you're replacing synchros and the occasional beat up gear, it should not be anywhere near that much $ in parts. All new synchros, 2 gears, about 10 bearings and other odds and ends cost me ~$550. I'm reusing a few of the bearings on the layshaft and one on the mainshaft, but the rest are new.
Cheers,

I live near olympia and I have a 91 turbo 5 speed tranny with 170K miles on it. Only thing is, I don't know if it's good or not. I could ask the previous owner about it though, he's on this board and owns a subaru shop in spanaway.

I've never driven the car before so I don't know if the tranny was good or not but it's sitting on the floor of my garage right now.

There is currently a '92 AWD L Wagon with 5 speed for sale on craigslist for about $800. It's supposed to run (274K miles) but the clutch is toast. Current owner says he drove it from Tacoma to Yelm and everything worked good. It's actually clean enough to save, but does need some work. It's red with bad clear coat on teh hood and fender tops. needs windshield,a dn a few other little things.

Would make a nice donor, or fixer...

Search cars for sale tacoma area, then search for Yelm, or Legacy.
