need help removing my gauge cluster...

Post by speedmaxx »

so Im looking to replace all the green bulb in my gauge cluster with blue led's, I also plan on installing a nice gauge bezel. this one

ebay link

so a few months ago I tryed pulling out the gauge cluster, I got all the screws out and as I attempted to acually pull the cluster out I wasent able to clear the sterring wheel, so I kind of just quite and reinstalled it.

whats the trick to getting the cluster out? I would perfer not to remove my steering wheel. also will led's just plug right in or will I have to solder them up?

o and is the speedo on a cable or electronic? its 93 legacy l auto if that matters

thanks

I think the speedo is cable, I know it was on the pre facelift cars and I'm pretty sure it is on the post facelifts as well.

You need to drop your steering column. There's a couple bolts underneath that hold it in place. Just remove those and the whole column will drop down several inches.

so do I risk messing anything up because there is a cable? or will the cable just unhook?

Nope just yank on it real good and the cable pops right off. Likewise you just have to line up the cable on the thing and shove it back in when you put the gauge cluster back in. You'll know if it's on because it should snap back in place.

it is kind of wierd getting it out without removing the steering colum but i have done about 100 times i promise. make sure you have all the srcews out so you dont break something. make sure the hazard is unplugged. then you kind of have to tilt the sterring whell as much as it will go and then pull from the top part of the bezel down to the column then slide it towards the passenger side till it comes out. make sure you unscrew the hazard switch as well from the bezel so you dont break it. you do kind have to be rought with it but it wont break anything. if you need i might be able to put it on video. hope this helps

if you could post a vid that would be great.

so wait I dont need to remove any screws from the steering wheel? I was hoping to have it drop down another inch or so, after that the cluster should be able to come right out.

There are two bolts that hold the steering column to the dash. You can remove those and lower the steering column to help get the gauge cluster out without removing the steering column.

It's really not hard at all. Just two bolts that are easily accessible under the column. Takes 2 seconds to unbolt them and it's easy to get it bolted back up when you're done. Makes more room and makes it easier to do the whole operation.
