I just picked this turbo up and it was supposedly from a 30k mile car. however it has some pitting on the leading edges of the blades. I'm not knowledgable enough with turbochargers to really tell wether or not these fins are going to cause problems or not. obviously theyre not optimum, but am I risking catastrophic failure by running this turbo? what could have caused this damage?
Also there is some shaft play side to side, I'd say a mm or so max. I cannot see any scuffing to the compressor housing. when is shaft play too much shaft play?
what are some of the caveats to running a turbo in this condition?
according to my haynes manuel and this is with the vf turbo you should put a dial indicator on it and the shaft play should not exceed 0.0035 inches..... as far as the warpped blades and what not i think that youll be alright it may not compress air as well and your preformance may lack compared to a new condition one. but itll run no doubt plus if you got it for cheap you get what you pay for ya know.
