The Swastika Laundry (Dublin 1960s)

Post by irishlegacy »

Just thought you members here might like a little bit of Irish past history that was part of my life back in the 1960s. We had a local laundry that was actually called The Swastika Laundry. A wonderful company that supplied a great service to the many that could not afford washing machines.

I actually remember going on these little electric vans many times after school.

Great years and happy times past

Weird. Nobody found that offensive or anything? That would never fly in the US. Most countries, I imagine. Jaguars are named Jaguars instead of SS because the negative reminder of Hitler's boys necessitated the name change. Of course, the swastika goes back way before an angry, strangely effeminately mannered, midget who had a barber with an eye problem appropriated it. Did the Laundry date from before the war?

Why would the image I used here have violated the terms of use..it was a little electric van ( Red) with a swastika sign on it..

It is clear from the photo this was not a Sherman tank, it was a laundry van from a genuine company called the Swastika Laundry based in Dublin.

Can some of the Mods please explain why this photo was removed.

Thanks

That's a photobucket problem, not LCO.

I thought that thing was pretty interesting, but I'm sure they are not sympathetic to your reasons for posting it... We live in a world full of oversensitive wankers all too eager to be offended by something, just so they have an excuse to make noise and solicit some attention.
Cheers,

Ridiculous. It's called history. Then again, history is not an American strong suit. Or geography. Or grammar. Or science anymore. But out competitive eaters RULE OVER ALL!

And not to be a history NAZI, but a Sherman tank with a swastika would be an odd one. Then again, towards the end of the war, with their material shortages, they might have used some captured Allied equipment. I know they did that with Mustangs, but the Mustang kicked ass while the Sherman was inferior to their own equipment.

The T34 was a great tank when it was introduced and stayed competitive, but the German Eastern Front was always begging for equipment as well. Towards the end of the war, after years of 24 hour bombing campaigns against German manufacturing, they needed everything. I know aircraft better, but some pilot diaries I've read describe glory hunters' frustration at finding German targets to shoot down.

I think the one you're talking about was captured during the Russian campaign, and then driven into a lake, to be found and restored recently?

Yep:

mike, thats the one. it's a pretty impressive recovery effort too, I can't cant believe they were able to just winch it out. I don't think I would have been standing near that cable like those people were. i'd like to see some footage from when they started it up after sitting in the bottom of a lake for so many years.

Here's a link to a pic of the laundry van:

Swastika Laundry

Their use of the symbol preceded the Nazi party, as the business was founded in 1912. An interesting read.
