In the midst of timing belt repair

the gear pulley to the left of the water pump also needs to be replaced

its under the tensioner

The one directly under the tensioner is the water pump. No I have no diagram, but I have a picture.

Hey, that's my garage...and engine!

The pulley to the left of the water pump is just an idler pulley.

If it is the idler pulley, most likely the dealer is going to be the only source for a new one. If you were of the opinion that a used one would suffice you could post a WTB add in the parts shed. Here is the link http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewforum.php?f=15

Just be sure to specify what year, size of engine and your location ( for shipping price estimation ).

I'm sure somebody on here has what you need and you will get it for way less than the dealer price.

They're under $30 brand new on Ebay. Just search "subaru idler" and you'll find tons of them...they're the same for nearly all EJ series engines. :)

The dealer wanted $87 (closest option)

the mechanic found it at the local autoparts store for $60

I went for the $60 just to get the car back hopefully today

thank you everyone for the help - greatly appreciated

Damn that's crazy expensive. I'd have sold you one for the price of shipping with 73K miles but works fine.

check the coolant level....might be the thermostat or water pump.

Before you send it away, I'm sure people would want parts off of it.
