I've poked around a bit regarding the possibility of doing this swap, and look to have a shot at a turbo wagon with a blown trans. I'm considering just pulling the motor and putting it in my '93 N/A wagon with the stock 5-sp trans. I realize that the turbo 5-sp was a beefier model to deal with the increased power, but if I plan on just leaving the motor alone for now and not modding beyond the stock HP and don't beat on it too hard, can my trans. cope? I know that putting in a new clutch etc. makes sense while doing it, but is there anything else that keeps this from being straightforward bolt-in job?

Trans should be ok.

You'll need to swap over and wire the turbo specific sensor and engine crossmember. It's not too bad of a swap.

you only have to add 5 wires to the harness, and so far my n/a trans is holding up to my setup which is more power then stock.

if you get the turbo wagon don't just take the engine out unless the body is really messed up.

wow, do i know you? I got a 92 ss and will be swapping into a 93 n/a wagon too! good thread! did you rebuild the 22t at all? i plan to regasket it and have the heads redone, maybe new rings, fmic and full exhaust. anyone else done this?

If you're going FMIC, which is a lot of work BTW, you will want to get a bigger turbo than the VF11. Which means bigger injectors and some form of engine managment and a better fuel pump.

I would just stick with a TMIC.

Just Cause It seems like this is an on topic question. I just pulled a 91 EJ22t Complete Engine from a pick and pull also the complete engine wiring harness with ECU, the turbo crossmember and I managed to grab the 3.90 VLSD as well. I just found a 1991 Legacy L 5-sp N/A in my area. I want to put the Ej22t into the Legacy L and use the 5 speed trans. If possible i would also like to the the 3.90 VLSD. basicallt turning the legacy L into a SS. I've been reading a lot on this forum and from what i gather this would not be a very hard swap. If there is already a sticky or a link to a swap like this please post it. I have anything i need off the donor car Im trying to to this as simple as possible. Any info regarding this would be great.

If you have all the harness and whatnot, then just substitute the NA stuff with Turbo stuff

YES! Really that easy? I did not grab any of the dash wiring... Only the engine stuff. Is the Turbo ECU gonna be cool with the 5mt? Can i just plug and play? Turbo wiring harness and ecu into the existing wiring on the legacy L and i've got an SS?

You're a dirty thread hi-jacker! :-)

But since I've become a boost addict, I can't condem a fellow EJ22T swapper.

As Josh mentioned above, you'll need to get the turbo sensors from the pass. strut tower and run wires back to the ECU (easier than pulling the interior harness IMHO), swap the cam/crank wires @ the ECU, swap the X-member, turbo exhaust - exh. manifold/up-pipe/downpipe/etc.....keep SEARCHING as this has been done before....it's not too bad a project...and well worth it.

Also, pretty sure the NA 5speed is 4.11 so your 3.90 VLSD won't work....all the turbo 5-speeds (and ATs) are 3.90.

Thanks you guys Rock seriously. Im buying this legacy L in the morning and I pulled the engine yesterday! This is gonna be a quick build. Thanks for the info. Ill post pics.

The only part that Im a little confused about is the wiring. Is it possible to use the turbo engine harness and ecu on the 2.2T then just plug the 3 other yellow plug wire bundles into the open slots on the turbo ECU and call it an OEM swap? The Turbo sensors- is that a collection of weird vacuum looking little guys with wire harness plugs on the end? Connected with a couple of 10mm bolts towards the front of the pass side strut tower right behind the stock air box? I also have the wiring harness from behind the dash as well if i need it.
Sorry to pry but this is the information i've been looking for.

The engine harness connectors behnid the battery are different. You will need to use your existing engine harness.

It's really just easy to add the turbo sensor wiring. Yes that is the stuff on the passenger side strut tower near the air box.

Its worth it if you've got ALOT of time to do research, the wirring was the hardest part for me.

n2x4 has something similar to you i beleive, being that his OBD1 NA 5spd was converted to turbo. He has an Excelent chart of which wires should go where for the swap aswell of some pictures of the wiring for the extra sensors.

What i did is a little rigged but its working so far. I converted my car to OBD1 from OBD2. I disected the harness and cut every wire that doesnt run from an ecu plugs to the engine or engine related sensors. You'll be left with several yellow wires and a few extras. The yellows are power feed for various sensors and things like IAC, injectors, O2 heater, coil pack etc.
I have these wires directly fed from the battery with a fuse i have to pull so the battery doesnt drain while parked overnight.

I get a random CEL that chimes in every couple weeks for a day or so, which i cant check as i dont have the OBD1 plug anymore or the B10 Scan Tool assembled. Pretty sure its nothing serious.
