Just got the TD04, now what

Post by robbcolecrabtree »

So I just rebuilt my motor. Well, I replaced all of the gaskets and went through everything from the headgaskets on up. And after putting it back together, I wished I had done something that I could really feel the difference. So I bought a 2002 WRX turbo to put on. I believe that is the TD04. I am new to the Legacy scene, but not new to working on cars, so I come with quite a bit of knowledge. I am planning on getting:

-3" turbo back exhaust
-Revtronix Stage 2 chip
-FMIC - because I like front mount instead of top mount, unless you all disagree and think TMIC is better. I am open to opinions.
-This Snorkus intake/delete I am hearing about
-JECS MAF ( I am not sure what this is, but I know I need it) I just don't know what car the JECS MAF comes from
-440cc or 480cc injectors, not sure which yet, or where I should get them
-Power mode button mod (yah, I have an auto)
-And I would like to put a wrx or STI scoop on the hood, but I am curious if that takes a lot of body work, or if it is closer to a bolt on with minor modification

(Also, Mexicanzero, I noticed that you put on a MSD coil pack that belonged to a neon. How did you do that? what did you have to do to the coilpack to get it to work?)

I am just a NEWB that needs some help with all of this subaru stuff. I am unfamiliar with the parts, and where to get some of these parts for a car this old. Thanks everyone in advance for all of your help and opinions.

Also, on the JECS MAF. Where can I find one of these? I searched the web, and cannot find anything in english that says where I can purchase one, or if I can get one off of an older car. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The JECS maf can be found on the non-turbo AT 90-91 legacy, and the non-turbo AT & MT 92-94 legacy.

the 440's you can just get off of a WRX, and im not positive on the 480's. Also, the WRX/Sti hood scoop looks really gay on our cars IMHO, but let me get this link for you. A guy on here built one for us and is trying to sell them.

Hmm

Post by robbcolecrabtree »

Yah, I looked at it some more, and I really like just the plain sleeper type look, and the wrx scoop is just way too loud. It would be nice to have something more functional, but I don't want something that just sticks up too high. Thanks for the tip on the wrx injectors btw.

Also, I think I have decided to go the TMIC route instead of the FMIC due to the fact that I am not going to be running an outrageous amount of power, and I think that a FMIC will be a little overkill and much much much more difficult and costly to put in versus the TMIC.

Hello robbcolecrabtree, i don't mean to thread jack but you and i are in the same boat at the same time, and i have similar questions and i don't want to start another thread.

I too am a newb and just ordered my td04 and 06 tmic last night. here are some more questions i have also.
1. How come the 06/07 intercooler seems to be what everyone is looking for?
2. why do you need the JTEC MAF ?
3. What is a wideband and what does it do? Again where and how much?
4. The revtronix chip, is that gonna work with a td05 when i upgrade in the future? Or are they gonna put out stage 3?
5. Can the td04 be modified in any way to make it better? I'd like to do this before the install.
Any links to the silicone "y" pipe needed to make my set up work?
6. Is the uppipe worth getting or does the stock one suffice?
I'm looking for around 300 to 350 to the ground. Is that hard to achieve or even possible with my mods? My car has 220K on it. I have a k&n cai, 3" turbo back MBC already installed. Boost/vac guage, kartboy shifter.

Stuff left

Post by robbcolecrabtree »

So I am down to needing the TMIC for a 06-07 WRX. I will pick up the chip once I have the other parts. And I also need the injectors (If anyone knows where to find some good ones, pref. with new O-rings, let me know) and a nice deep not ricey 3" turbo back exhaust. Any opinions anyone, or any ideas on where I can find these hidden treasures?

Nasioc.com or subaruforester.org have them with more regularity than here. (think you'll be needing the forester XT one that came off the 2.5 motor)

Florin1 wrote: 1. How come the 06/07 intercooler seems to be what everyone is looking for?
Because the 02-05 intercoolers are too tall and hit the firewall. You have to bash in the firewall or grind part of the throttle body to use it. STi ones are way to big. The easiest is either one off a stock 20g OR the 06-07. Good luck finding one off a 20g.

2. why do you need the JTEC MAF ?

Its actually the JECS MAF... It allows you to run more boost without maxing out. However you MUST have a tune to be able to use it without messing stuff up (running lean)

3. What is a wideband and what does it do? Again where and how much?

A wideband 02 sensor tells you the Air/ Fuel ratio the engine is running at by measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream. A good one will run about $300

4. The revtronix chip, is that gonna work with a td05 when i upgrade in the future? Or are they gonna put out stage 3?

Just wait until the User Tunable version comes out. It shoudl be out shortly. Then have a shop professionally tune it.

5. Can the td04 be modified in any way to make it better? I'd like to do this before the install.

Not really... I believe Blouch makes/made an upgraded wheel... but its much more cost effective to get a better turbo... 16g, 18g, vf39, vf43... etc.

Any links to the silicone "y" pipe needed to make my set up work?

I hate to do this... but search...

the simplest way to to get a silicone one for an 02-05 and extend it.

6. Is the uppipe worth getting or does the stock one suffice?

Leave the stock one. Its just fine. No cat is basically the same as a new STi one.

I'm looking for around 300 to 350 to the ground. Is that hard to achieve or even possible with my mods? My car has 220K on it. I have a k&n cai, 3" turbo back MBC already installed. Boost/vac guage, kartboy shifter.

No. You'll need more than a td04. I woudl suggest doing things in stages. For that much power you're going to need a LOT more work than just a td04 and a top mount.

Yes you will need N/A rails for the 440's I believe only our injectors will fit in our rails... WITHOUT MODIFICATION. You can get the 440's to fit in our rails, Here is the link

WRONG!!!

440cc Grey top and 480cc Yellow Tops fit just fine in EJ22T TURBO RAILS just fine.

I have had 440s in stock rails just fine. So have other members. Kleinkid has also done this.

I honestly have no idea. All i did was swap the stock fuel injectors O-Rings onto the grey tops and put them back in. Never had a single issue.

The STi 550 Yellow Side-feeds work in the '92-94 NA rails, for example.

The 440(gray) and 480(yellow) work in the turbo rails AND the '90-91 AT NA rails -BTDT.

I, too, thought I needed different rails, but Mr. 555BCTurbo set me straight!

^^ wow a lot of good info in these last posts. So another question, what if i get some injectors with too high of a cc, will the computer adjust and dump the same amount of fuel needed, or will it dump a whole bunch more. I'm asking because in the future when i upgrade further, i'd like to not have to buy bigger injectors.

smh0101- pm me on how much you want for the injectors.
