Another larger hoodscoop idea

I'm still bored at work so I came up with this crazy idea while smoking a cigarette outside and looking at the hood of my car . . .

Instead of enlarging the hoodscoop outward, by using an impreza scoop or whatever, how about enlarging it inward?

I was thinking maybe cutting out the hood before the scoop and fiberglassing the opening parallel to the ground. Since the hood slopes at an angle, this should increase the area of the opening, correct?

I figure this would also give some interesting folds in the hood, similar to the late model EVOs.

What do you all think?

hmmm. Thats pretty good thinking. It may look actually pretty good with the little scoop behind it. Is a scoop going down the hood as good as one poking up? So Jason, I guess your not planning on going front mount, eh? I still have no clue how I want to intercool my car. But I know for sure if it's gonna be a top mount then somethin's gonna have to happen to that little scoop.

IS going to use a front mount... but unlike one you've ever seen in a subaru...

Problem is that it's a little far down the line. All i need is to win the lottery and i'll be done in 2 weeks. ;)

LegacyT, I really have no idea how I'd run the piping for a front mount, can you? JasonGrahn, if you have any ideas, let us know. But then there's also the question of cost . . .

What I'm thinking is just keeping the v2 intercooler I have on the car. It's already paid for, right? I was considering using the wrx intercooler I had but decided just to sell it (along with the wrx turbo - need money for those injectors. lol!). Yeah, it was bigger, but the real culprit for me is getting air to any top mount. That's why I thought of this hood idea.

My friend is pretty damn good with fiberglass and thinks this idea shouldn't be a problem. Hehe, there aren't any laws that state you need a hood do you? I'm expecting at least two weeks that I'll be without a hood while trying to do this mod.

As much as the impreza scoop is bigger, I don't think it really fits these cars. Our cars are more box-like, with harder edges. A curved scoop just doesn't do it for me. Besides, with this fiberglass hood deal goin on, this seems more out-of-the-ordinary.

I was thinking about about maybe a Saab 9000 front mount. And piping it up like the aussie's have with the 2.5" tubing. But I see that they also had to cut holes through the chassis to plumb it all up. I'd have to look into it a bit further though. I still cant decide whether to try a front mount or get a Saab 900, USDM WRX or early WRX top mount and do somthing with the scoop. decisions decisions :lol: BTW do you plan on doing something like an EVO? With the double slits?

If you want, I think my friend has a 9000 saab front mount. Perfectly fine.

I was thinking about making a hood similar to the 2000 mustangs:

See how the hood area before the opening is recessed? I figure with the hoodscoop we already have, this should make for a impreza size scoop. I could even have the opening come a little forward of the stock location, so I get enough airflow to the actual intercooler, and not behind it, as the stock hoodscoop location dictates.

I might be able to work some EVO style openings in this area as well, or maybe to the sides of the folds . . . then there's always the 22B vents.

The possibilities are endless . . .

Another thing about front mounts. . .

The Aussie's Liberties and the wrx's use a different coolant tank located next to the intake box. Ours have that black plastic box on the drivers side of the engine. You will need to source one of the wrx coolant tanks to allow access for the piping from the intercooler to the throttle body.

Oh yeah. All of these modifications I'm planning are based on anticipated problems with summer heat. Should these problems not exist, I would suggest just going with my setup.

I'll be sure to let you guys know if there are any problems once the weather starts getting warmer.

I was also thinking of another way to make the scoop larger, without much work. In front of the scoop there is an area that is about 2 inches wide that is just flat plastic. One could unbolt the scoop and cut an inch or so of the flat area thats in front of the actual scoop, out. Just using a felt tipped pen and draw a shape that you like and then cut it out, sand smooth and voila a scoop thats twice it's size with very little work.

there is plenty of room, you don't need a wrx coolant tank.

I'm pretty sure that the airflow from an inverted scoop would not work as well. If you look at how the air flows across the hood of the car you would see that only a fraction of the air would pass into the inverted scoop while the rest would continue to travel over the rest of the hood. Pretruding scoops (like the stock one) are designed to protrude in order to force the airflow stream directley into the scoop. The scoop in a way kinda 'scoops' or grabs the air into the intercooler. Lemme know if I'm way off base here.

Good thought though, I like to see active engineering design imagination. :)
