Quick transmission question.

Post by PlasticWrapInYourFuture »

I've noticed that I get a TQ bind only in 2nd gear of my 97 Legacy L. Is this the switchover to 4wd lock? I'm assuming that it is since I can think of no other reason. If it is, how do I get ahold of it so that I can use that fucntion on drive (if that's even possible?)

Trying replacing the tranny fluid. Measure how much comes out to be safe. Should require 4qts or so.

Inspecting the tranny fluid was my first instinct & it's still pretty bright red. I'm just trying to figure out if I should be worried or not. I've read in a lot of places that the Solenoid Duty C (I think that's why it's called) will fail & cause a TQ bind but I only have that in 2nd gear, not in drive so I'm trying to find out more about this situation...

Why are you driving around in 2nd gear? Make sure you have 4 tires that are the same size, and pretty even tread. Also be sure the air pressure is the same.

I was testing the gears at school. I'm in transmission class & not many instructors there know about Subaru transmissions. Air pressure is the same (35 psi), size is the same (low profiles on Outback rims).

If it's only in second it won't be torque bind.
It will probably be the brake band needs adjusting.
