rotated help please

Post by iluvdrt »

Well, my friend and I have been running into a slight problem. Because of the 98 DOHC heads and intake mani on our 22T we don't have enough room to make a good 90* turbo inlet. The turbo inlet is too close to the intake mani. The end result is no boost after 5K rpms. The one we have is sucking closed after 7psi in the upper rpm band.

Are there any rotated set-ups that don't use an EWG? We are only looking to run the TD04 or VF39 for now but don't want to drop the $1K on a perrin EWG set up. A rotated set-up would allow a much better turbo inlet that won't become restricted.

Thanks for any help.

How about just putting a hose clamp on the hose where its sucking closed? It helps it keep shape. It's worth a try.

Why not just make your own rotated kit with the factory subaru turbo? Extend your uppipe or fab one up to relocate your turbo.

It is in a VERY tight spot, and plus the inlet with the constriction caused from being smashed against the inatke manifold is only 1/2 the size of the turbo intake its self

The uppipe is not the problem, that is easy, it is the down pipe I am not sure about.

Besides, by the time I buy the welder, learn to weld, the tube bender to bend exhaust i'll have enough money invested into all that to just by the ewg perrin set-up.

I have an extra down pipe, so I guess I can experiment at the auto hobby shop

One 90 degree bend is all you need along with some form of Subaru downpipe is all you need to make a DP for a rotated setup. Its pretty much the same for the up pipe.

If you can find someone that is decent at welding, all you need is an angle grinder, some cutoff wheels, and time.

Well if it is just 1 90 that I guess i will get that at the zone and give it a shot maybe next weekend. I have several spare OEM down pipes laying around.

There isn't that much work at all really, when I did my rotated TD04 on my BD it was just a matter of extending the up pipe and slightly rotating and re angling my DP. When I did mine it was pretty much the first thing I had ever fabricated as far as piping goes, and it was still easy.

Edit: Oh yeah, and it helps a lot if you clock the compressor housing like I did too.

Is that plumbed correctly? Do you have a front mount that it is hooked to? I don't know much about turbos but this looks really weird to me.

Cool, looks good. I will still be using the 07 wrx TMIC but otherwise I think I could def fix her up. I have been welding/cutting for years...only at work. I am not saying I am a pro, but I think I could def do this. Thanks for all the help/support.

^ yes, he has a FMIC.

Yes the BD has a FMIC. The pipe set is kinda goofy, but it worked well and went together really easily.

If you clock your compressor out let so it's almost straight up, it should be pretty damn easy to get a 2" manderal U-bend and make a hard pipe that matches up with the stock TMIC Y-pipe.

If you look around enough, you might be able to find a TMIC like the one on my SS, which is pretty damn thick, and makes piping a breeze.

^ next time, clamp the 90 to the IC before you connect the dots. That coupler looks rather stressed.

It is, haha, but when I did the TD04/TMIC install, I was getting really tired and wanted to go home, so I stopped caring haha. The only time it's blown off is when the car boost spiked for 20ish PSI, after that I welded a bead onto it and it's been fine. Doesn't much matter since this whole setup will be changing shortly.
