Front crank seal repeated failure. wtf.

Post by MikeyMeyagi »

so this is the 3rd time this has happened, the front crank seal on my car keeps pushing out, and wearing on the timing gear till it starts leaking. ive replaced it twice, and this last seal i glued in with hondabond sealer. im leaking oil again and i can imagine the damn seal came out again....
my pcv system is basically a breather system open to atmosphere, and both valve covers are vented to atmosphere too. i was thinking about making a positive crankcase evac system off the exhaust, to try to fix this problem.
any thoughts?

what brand of seal were you using? I have heard to only use genuine subaru seals because aftermarket do not fit just right. however if you glued it in and it popped out something definitely is not right. could something be wrong with the oil pump?

the seal i get at napa has the same markings of the oem seal.
idk how the oil pump could be out of round or too big for the seal but its possible i guess.

How many miles on the block?

I am betting your #3 bearing is worn to shit and you are getting crank walk.

Remove all belts and firmly grab your crank and yank it back and forth. Not your penis. If it moves significantly, then the thrust bearing #3 is WORN OUT.

LOL!!!

I had crank walk pretty bad on an EJ22T. It moved about 1/8+ inch in and out by hand. Which is like 25X more than the maximum allowance in the FSM.

FIXED.

it turned out it was oil pressure pushing the seal out. after it popped out again i pulled the oil pump off to inspect it, and found 2 of the 5 phillips head screws that hold the cover on the back of the pump were backed about half way out. i never had the pump off previous to this, so ive got no idea how they loosend up. but its fixed and i have better oil pressure, WIN.

I think that those bolts backing out is a known discrepency. Probably a good idea to use Locktite on them when you have access to the pump. I think/hope I did.
