The pug on the oil galley has M12x1.25 threads.

There isn't a spot for an oil return on an N/A motor, so you either need to drill and tap the spot on the head that the factory does, or weld a fitting on your oil pan.

You are correct. If it is below the oil level, the oil will back up in your turbo and make a mess of things.

I vote running the oil return into the valve cover because hard corners cause oil to climb the side of the pan

Very true.

Otherwise it's not that hard to pull the head to drill and tap in the factory location. It's just a little unnerving to drill through about an inch of material on the head. Tap it for 3/8 NPT to run a -8 or -10, and it's done.

negative.

the level of the oil return fitting on an oil pan has never, and probably will never become an issue with a turbocharger.

Garrett specifically states to avoid it. Obviously some turbos will be more sensitive than others when it comes to the drain as their oil requirements vary.

It is always good practice to have a clean, straight, free-flowing oil drain. The factory location works well, and is easily tapped to a 3/8 NPT to run a -8 or -10 if one is running a unique setup.

But yes, there are always exceptions to the rule. To say one particular way will always be fine is asking for trouble. Not much is an absolute, ever.
