installing A/C in a 91 SS without A/C

Post by MarkyD »

I am curious what all is involved. car in question has no A/C parts - no lines, condenser, compressor, etc. How much work is involved in getting A/C into a SS without it? Are the parts interchangeable from later model Legacy or any other Subaru? On top of that, are there shops out there that specialize in this very thing?

thanks in advance -

Mark

i just took everything you need off my 92 legacy engine compartment wise. i can take off the interior side of things too. but i dont know jack about installing it into a non a/c car. im sure it's not overly difficult though.

The SS should have had AC installed originally. So it's probably just a matter of putting the parts back on.

there a a friend here that has all the A/C parts from a 2002 Bugeye WRX Wagon. Does anyone know if they'll work, or do I need specific pieces from an SS?

thanks-

The newer stuff isn't going to work. You will most likely need AC parts from the 90-94 legacies.

There are some differences in AC systems between the years. There is a Calsonic and Zexel system. Plus in 92 or 93, the systems went from R12 to R134a. That's not to say you can't use R134a in a system originally designed for R12, but there are a few things that need to be done.

What year SS do you have? There should be a sticker in the engine bay on the radiator core support. It will say what brand AC system was originally installed and whether it was R12 or R134a.
