1990 Legacy 4EAT Power light flashes 16 times on start

Post by notnowles »

So, I lost the speedometer function in my car the other day, and it looks as if there is a problem inside the trans, as everything external seems good.

I don't relish the thought of pulling this trans and tearing it down to fix the gear, but now I am getting 16 flashes of the "Power" light when I first start the car.

Transmission seems to work okay from what I can tell, with normal shifting, but I am wondering if the speedometer function also has an input through the panel to the trans computer?

This car was built in 1/90.

So, have I just lost the "Power " setting, or have I lost a lot more (such as the AWD)?

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

SEARCH on transmission codes, pull 'em and report back....could just be the speedo gear..easy enough to change.

speedo gear and trans codes

Post by notnowles »

Thanks, wtdash.

I will search for codes and see what I can figure out.

I replaced the intermediate speedo drive unit that threads into the top of the case (it had seized and snapped in 2) and pulled the cable, cleaned, lubed and reinstalled.

The speedo works when I attach my cordless drill chuck to the end of the cable at the transmission, but when everything is reconnected, no speedometer function...

I tried pulling up on the gear but it will not come out of the trans.

At risk of repeating myself, there is a small steel plug pressed into the differential case in line with the speedo gear, and I am wondering if there is a setscrew behind it which keeps the gear from coming up and out.

All speculation, of course...

Thanks again!

TCU has a speedo input and will throw a code if it doesn't get the signal.
