Ive got a friend that has a 97 GT and it either has a rod knock or piston slap... haven't heard for myself yet.
He wants to put a 2.2 in it since they're more reliable but we dont know if it has to be an OBD1 or OBD2 2.2
Im sure it's been covered before but im still having some issues with el searcho...

Go check out the ultimatesubaru.org/forum....they do this swap all the time.
'95+ Legacy (Automatics for sure/Manuals maybe) = OBD2
The '95 EJ22 (must be from an Automatic car since it has the EGR valve that the '97 GT has, too) is a 99% drop-in and go.
A '96-98 EJ22 will also work, but you'll need the exhaust manifold/headers/y-pipe since they are single-port heads.
Keep the '97's ECU; it'll run the EJ22 just fine.
Also, my Subie mechanic said the Impreza's EJ22 ('95-98 ) won't work as its wiring is different (Impreza made in Japan ??; Legacy in USA ??) - I don't know if this is correct, but just be aware.
The '90-94 don't have the EGR, plus the wiring/sensors are different.
The '99+ EJ22 is the Phase 2, which is also different and would have more wiring issues.
Piston slap is loudest @ start-up, and then becomes less so once the pistons/rings/cylinders warm up and it's not 'bad' -just annoying; rod knock should be consistent -cold or warm, I believe.

ok so far the info has helped out alot. thank you.
I'm not looking to do a whole motor swap in his car. just the short block only. I probably should have been more informative.
That shouldn't pose any problems tho right?

EJ22 block w/EJ25D heads? Your compression will be way low, from what I've been told/read.
I would think the lack of power would be 'painful'.
If you use the '97's intake and heads the EGR issue is moot, and I 'think' you could then use any '90-98 EJ22.
