STi Swap?

Post by Nor-Cal'N »

Just a few questions I have about them. I might be doing this in the near future as my 02' WRX is starting to get up there in mileage, and Im worried about heavily modding it.

Does the STi 6-Speed/Engine line up and fit in the 1st Gen Legacy? What are my options for braking since the STi Brembos most likely wont fit? Would I be able to do a whole dash conversion as well or is the STi dash wider? Are there any wiring guides or pre-made harnesses you can buy?

Anymore info you have would be great. Just want to know as much info as I can before I dive head first into this. Thanks!

Engine and tranny will fit. The brembos will fit on the STI hubs you'll need if you do the tranny swap (assuming it's an 05+ STI), course you'll need wheels that'll fit brembos.

Engine and tranny will fit. As for dash- I don't know of anyone who has done it, so you might be on your own.

You can get the Brembos to fit, but you will either be swapping rear-end parts, or getting the adapter parts to make it fit.
Yes I have too many Subarus
No you can't have one

What's the difference between STI and WRX dash? WRX dash has been done before, at least twice.

So as far as getting Brembos to fit...they will be able to clear 16"s right? The offsets gonna have to be fairly low as well along with some probable fender rolling? Anything else?

No they will not fit. You need 17" wheels that will clear the Brembos.

if you swap the sti engine and tranny in there along with upgraded hubs for an 05+ swap, wouldn't you also have to upgrade the cv axles as well?

Thats what I thought but I just wanted to make sure. What are my options for braking then? Aftermarket?

Ive seen an WRX dash in a 91 so it can be done, dont know how hard it is but it fits well. 2 things, you will need to use a 1st gen turbo legacy AUTO trans drive shaft from what i've heard or have either the legacy or STi drive shaft changed, and if you directly swap all the suspension/knuckles/brakes and use stock sized and ofset STi wheels they will stick out past the fenders about 3/4", Suposedly using WRX wagon control arms and lateral links will solve this as well, we havent tried that, I think were just going to do something custom to clear the wheels.

You can use a STi tranny without converting everything. You can keep your axles, rear end, knuckles, brakes, etc. Been there, done it.

Not to sound ignorant but how can you use legacy axles and rear end (and there for the knuckles, brakes, etc.) without at least making frankenaxles?

I have an '05 6mt, so a 3.90 rear end is money in the bank.

An auto driveshaft (from a first gen Legacy) makes the whole rear of the car a non-issue.

As far as the front goes, the infamous stub axles for the trans (about $140 with seals and circlips) lets you use your old front axles. This new board lost my old PM's, so I don't have part numbers off-hand, but they can be found on nasioc in the multiple 6mt swap threads. Those stub axles let you use all the old front axles without issue.

Game, set, match. 6mt in your car.

6mt linkage, and a speedo driver from an old auto trans, and your set.

That's the abbreviated version.

For regular driving the auto shaft is probably fine but its not strong enough otherwise. With an EJ22NA I have been able to damage multiple auto driveshafts. Right now I am running one that had the end cut off and the U-Joint from a 98 outback shaft welded on.

Interesting.

The auto driveshaft I've been using is out of an SS. It held up to two years of abuse from the 6mt. There were about a dozen hard launches in that time frame too. Are the SS and N/A driveshafts different? Derek's SS auto driveshaft hasn't blinked at several 20 psi launches

The auto driveshafts are the same between non-turbo & turbo cars.

All the first gen drive shafts are basically the same except some of the early ones had a "cv joint" in the middle while the rest had three tiny u-joints

Any differences between them? Like is one better then the other? What would be good for low offset, wide wheels? CV Joint?

The u-joint style is probably better but it doesn't really matter because its usually the front most U-joint that fails. The type of wheels you use won't really matter because the rear differential is independent of the hubs.

edit: wait a minute... Are you talking about half shafts which go between the differential and the wheel or the driveshaft which goes between the transmission and the differential?
